Adoption Places near Me [How Adoption Works]

When a hopeful parent is new to adoption, it’s natural for them to wonder, “Where do you go to adopt a child?” These adoptive families often envision themselves visiting adoption places nearby, choosing the child they want to adopt and taking them home. But, the process is more intensive than that.

In domestic infant adoption, here is how the process generally works:

·         Step 1: An expectant mother typically chooses adoption before the baby is born.

·         Step 2: The prospective birth parent works with an adoption agency to create an adoption plan that accommodates their needs and preferences.

·         Step 3: The birth mother chooses the adoptive family that they believe is right for the baby. Often, the adoptive family and prospective birth mother will even get to know each other before birth.

It’s normal for people unfamiliar with adoption to search “adoption places near me,” thinking they can simply go and pick out a child. But, that’s not how the process works. With open adoption as the modern standard, today’s adoptions are much more personal and ethical. It’s designed to create the best outcome for all parts of the adoption triad: adoptive families, birth parents and adoptees.

Where Can I Adopt a Child?

So, you may be asking, “If there aren’t designated places to adopt a child, then where can I adopt a baby?”

Instead of going to an “adoption place,” you will work with an adoption agency. Depending on where you live and where your agency is located, you may or may not speak with your professional in person.

There are many different types of adoption agencies, and it takes time and research to find the one that’s right for you.

For example, if you work with a local adoption agency, you will likely adopt a baby that lives in your state or metro area. If you work with a national adoption agency, then you can adopt a baby anywhere in the United States.

Or, if you work with an international adoption agency, you might adopt a baby from another country. Where to adopt kids internationally will depend on the countries in which your international adoption agency operates. Make sure that you work with a Hague-accredited agency to ensure an ethical and legal process.

Because there are different types of adoption agencies, each type offers different services. From a general perspective, your adoption agency will help you:

·         Create an adoption plan

·         Make your adoptive family profile

·         Advertise to prospective birth mothers

·         Communicate with the birth mother through open adoption

·         Finalize the process in court

There are many more nuances in the adoption process, but your trusted adoption professional will guide you through each step of it These agencies are, in essence, where to adopt babies today.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need to retain our own attorney?

No, American Adoptions has established relationships with some of the best adoption attorneys in the nation. Because adoption laws vary from state to state and between counties, it is important to utilize the services of an adoption attorney who specializes in the state where the adoption will finalize, which is unknown until you match with an expectant mother. You have the right to retain your own attorney, but doing so may be an additional, unnecessary expense.

Can we choose the gender of our baby?

American Adoptions does not allow gender specificity in adoption. Any family who wishes to be gender-specific in their adoption should contact us at 1-800-ADOPTION and ask about the possibility of an exception waiver before taking any other steps toward adoption with our agency. Any families who do receive an exception to be gender-specific may also incur an additional fee, which helps cover the additional advertising costs of such a request.

Please note that gender specificity will likely increase your wait time significantly.
