Resources Available to Adoptive Families

Affording adoption is one of the main concerns for many hopeful adoptive families.

This guide will dive deeper into the resources available if you need a hand of help in adoption. If you want more free adoption help, then you can call 1-800-ADOPTION today or fill out our online contact form to get more free adoption information.

Why Does Assistance for Adoptive Parents Matter?

Because adoption can be an expensive journey, any help— whether it’s financial or emotional — can go a long way.

The costs of adopting will vary depending on which type of adoption you pursue. Each has its own unique services and help for adoptive families.

In many cases, hopeful adoptive families need support to meet a child’s needs. Adoption financial assistance and subsidies provide support that helps adoptive families access:

  • Medical care

  • Counseling or therapy

  • Special equipment

  • Tutoring programs

  • And more

What Are Adoption Subsidies?

Adoption subsidies are an often misunderstood resource for those who qualify for adoption assistance

Adoption subsidies are now recognized as a critical resource. These benefits are available to most children adopted in the U.S. from foster care and children with disabilities adopted privately, but there are certain requirements in order to be eligible for that assistance.

In most cases, the benefits are available until the child reaches adulthood.

Why Many Families Need Help with Adoption Fees

You’ll have to pay many necessary fees, but these adoption costs help professionals complete safe, legal adoptions.

Some expenses included in adoption fees are:

  • Administrative

  • Legal

  • Medical

Also, there are many professionals involved in the process, such as:

  • Adoption specialists

  • Attorneys

  • Courts

  • Medical professionals

  • Social workers

  • State-level administrators

  • And more

The cost comprises the necessary services from all these professionals. Any other costs primarily come from birth-parent expenses.

Because most families don’t have tens of thousands of dollars lying around, it’s common to wonder if you get financial adoption help, too. This is where financial assistance for adoptive parents comes into play.

Financial Help for Adoptive Parents: Adoption Grants

Depending on your financial situation and how far into the adoption process you are, some forms of adoption financial assistance will be available while others may not. Adoption grants are one of the most popular forms of financial assistance for adoptive parentsadoption grants.

A non-profit organization typically awards a grant, and families do not have to pay it back. This type of financial help for adoptive parents does come with some challenges: You have to apply for each grant, and you may not be awarded them in the end. But, the potential benefits outweigh any frustrations.

Financial Help for Adoptive Parents: Adoption Loans

Another form of adoption financial assistance is an adoption loan. Adoption loans are like standard personal loans. They typically:

  • Come from a financial institution

  • Have a set payment plan

  • Include interest

Taking out any loan brings some level of financial risk. That’s why many financial planners say that a loan should be a last-resort form of adoption financial aid.

Some adoption loans are better than others. And, many families have found adoption loans to be helpful. So, be sure to speak with a reputable financial advisor before applying.

Financial Help for Adoptive Parents: Adoption Fundraising

Other adoptive families have reduced their fees through adoption fundraising. This is an opportunity to be creative and get your whole community involved in your adoption journey.

If you already have other children, then they can join in on the fun. There are many fundraising ideas to try, such as:

  • A bake sale

  • A lemonade stand

  • An active fundraiser like a 5K color run or walk

  • A garage sale

  • And more

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need to retain our own attorney?

No, American Adoptions has established relationships with some of the best adoption attorneys in the nation. Because adoption laws vary from state to state and between counties, it is important to utilize the services of an adoption attorney who specializes in the state where the adoption will finalize, which is unknown until you match with an expectant mother. You have the right to retain your own attorney, but doing so may be an additional, unnecessary expense.

Can we choose the gender of our baby?

American Adoptions does not allow gender specificity in adoption. Any family who wishes to be gender-specific in their adoption should contact us at 1-800-ADOPTION and ask about the possibility of an exception waiver before taking any other steps toward adoption with our agency. Any families who do receive an exception to be gender-specific may also incur an additional fee, which helps cover the additional advertising costs of such a request.

Please note that gender specificity will likely increase your wait time significantly.
