A Few Bumps in the Road
American Adoptions takes every precaution to prevent disruptions, resulting in one of the lowest disruption rates among domestic adoption professionals. However, expectant mothers always have the right to change their minds during the adoption process.
Mary and Tony were one of the few “unlucky” families who suffered not one or even two disruptions, but three disruptions total before they successfully adopted their son Christopher in 2008.
Their story is a shining example of perseverance, strength and faith throughout the adoption process, reminding adoptive families that a disruption is just a bump in the road on the way to your child whom you will love forever.
The following is an excerpt from an interview with Mary about these topics:
How did you motivate yourselves to continue on?
After the third disruption, we drove from Arizona to Utah and stopped in Las Vegas. We were the two mopiest people in Vegas, but we had a great time. It helped.
I’m so glad we had that time in the car with just Tony and I. We talked about everything. I was upset for a little while, but when we pulled into our driveway, I said, “This is it. It’s on.”
“I held a baby in my arms, and I’m getting one,” I thought to myself. “I don’t care what we have to do, but we are getting a baby.”
We were so close, and now we wanted it desperately. Instead of being depressed, we were beyond driven. We took a couple of days off and became active again.
