American Adoptions is a huge supporter of openness in adoption. We’ve even gone so far as to request that our adoptive families be open to at least a semi-open adoption.
We also support adoptees in their search for information about their adoption. However, American Adoptions cannot offer an adoption search program, except for adoptions that were arranged by our agency, which was founded in 1991.
We were thrilled to hear more about G’s Adoption Registry, a nonprofit website that helps those affected by adoption to learn more about their adoptions and connect with birth family.
Gary Schaefer, the site’s creator, formed the site 15 years ago after his late wife began searching for her birth mother. It now received more than 8,000 visitors a month. G’s Adoption Registry relies on “search angels,” people who volunteer to help people collect information across the country and even in a few foreign countries. Solicitations are banned on the site; Schaefer is only interested in providing free help to those who are searching.
