A Step-by-Step Guide on Finding the Right Adoption Opportunity

One of life’s most beautiful journeys begins with building your family. Although there are many paths you can take, pursuing adoption is a great way to fulfill your dreams of becoming parents.

But how can you find babies for adoption? We’ve created this step-by-step guide on finding the right adoption opportunity along with some helpful information about babies waiting for adoption.

You can call 1-800-ADOPTION at any time to get free information.

As one of the best national adoption agencies in the country, we know just what it takes to help you grow your family through adoption.

How to Find Babies for Adoption in 5 Steps

Finding the right adoption opportunity can take some time, and the process will be different depending on which type of adoption you pursue. When you work with American Adoptions, we work hard to make sure your adoption experience is the best it can be.

With over 30 years of experience, our staff knows just what it takes to help you throughout your adoption journey and beyond. Below, we’ve listed five steps you can take to find babies for adoption.

Step 1: Discover Which Type of Adoption Is Right for You

When you’re trying to find babies waiting for adoption, it’s important to have an idea of the type of adoption you want to pursue. In general, there are two different types of domestic adoption: domestic infant adoption and foster care adoption.

If you’re trying to find babies available for adoption, then the best option is domestic infant adoption. This refers to the voluntary, permanent placement of a baby by their birth mother, who then selects an adoptive family for the baby.

Domestic infant adoption is different from foster care adoption because the children in the foster care system are older. Unlike domestic infant adoption, these children are typically waiting in government care, and the adoption is usually outside the birth mother’s control.

Step 2: Choose an Adoption Agency to Work with

The adoption process is complex, but when you work with a professional like American Adoptions, we’ll take care of every aspect of your adoption journey. There are many different types of agencies that have babies waiting for adoption, but no one can provide you with a better adoption experience than our staff.

As a national adoption agency, we work with prospective birth mothers across the country. Because of this, we offer shorter wait times and more adoption opportunities.

Local adoption agencies, however, are limited by geography and can complete only certain parts of the adoption process. As a full-service agency, we are equipped to help you throughout every step of your adoption.

Step 3: Consider the Adoption Services That Are Most Important to You

When you’re looking for babies available for adoption, there are many services you’ll need. At American Adoptions, we offer extensive services that ensure as smooth and stress-free of an experience as possible. Our services include:

  • Financial protection to ensure adoptive families that experience an adoption disruption have another chance

  • Shorter average wait times due to our nationwide advertising efforts, giving you the best shot at finding an adoption opportunity

  • Video profile services allowing you to create a detailed profile showcasing every aspect of your life to prospective birth parents

  • In-house home study services in fully licensed states to ensure you are as prepared for parenthood as possible

  • Post-placement adoption services to provide guidance and support even after placement has occurred

As a national, full-service adoption agency, we can guide you through every step of your journey. When you’re looking for a baby to adopt, American Adoptions is here to provide all the adoption-related services you need.

Step 4: Find an Adoption Opportunity

We will help you find an adoption opportunity, and, once you have met all the requirements, you’ll become a waiting adoptive couple. Once you become an active couple, we’ll show your profile to prospective birth mothers. Then, you can officially begin waiting for an adoption opportunity.

Although waiting for babies available for adoption can be difficult, we minimize wait times. When you work with American Adoptions, the wait time to adopt a baby is typically an average of 12 months. All too often, many hopeful adoptive families choose professionals who quote unrealistic wait times.

You can expect the shortest wait time with our agency because we put your family profile in front of more prospective birth parents than any other agency. In order to get the same exposure from another adoption professional, you’ll need to join more than 25 other agencies at the same time.

Step 5: Prepare for Placement

Once a prospective birth parent has selected you, you’ll have the chance to get to know them. This will depend on the level of openness that you wish to have throughout your adoption.

Open adoption is the second most common type of adoption relationship after mediated (or semi-open) adoption.

This type of adoption is recommended for adoptive families and birth parents who want to get to know each other before and after the process. When you’re looking for babies to adopt, 90% of domestic infant adoptions are at least semi-open.

At American Adoptions, we require our families to have some degree of openness with the birth mother. By having this requirement, we’ve found that there are many advantages to choosing an open adoption. Some of the benefits include:

  • Your child will know their adoption story, giving them the answers they need

  • Up-to-date medical information to get updates about the birth family’s medical history

  • More adoption opportunities, as most birth parents prefer some form of open contac

If you’re looking for babies to adopt, then it can be a challenging process. But, with the right guidance and support, it can be the most beautiful experience. Adoption is an incredible opportunity for you to build your family, and we will do everything we can to make sure your experience is the best it can be.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need to retain our own attorney?

No, American Adoptions has established relationships with some of the best adoption attorneys in the nation. Because adoption laws vary from state to state and between counties, it is important to utilize the services of an adoption attorney who specializes in the state where the adoption will finalize, which is unknown until you match with an expectant mother. You have the right to retain your own attorney, but doing so may be an additional, unnecessary expense.

Can we choose the gender of our baby?

American Adoptions does not allow gender specificity in adoption. Any family who wishes to be gender-specific in their adoption should contact us at 1-800-ADOPTION and ask about the possibility of an exception waiver before taking any other steps toward adoption with our agency. Any families who do receive an exception to be gender-specific may also incur an additional fee, which helps cover the additional advertising costs of such a request.

Please note that gender specificity will likely increase your wait time significantly.
