Adoption Counseling for Hopeful Families

The adoption journey can be filled with beautiful, life-changing experiences, but there may also be some difficult times. Having a support system in place can make all the difference. Sometimes, that will be from professional help, like an adoption counselor.

Below, we’ll answer five of the most common questions hopeful adoptive families have when they are considering adoption counseling services.

To learn more about adoption counseling or how to start the adoption process, call us at 1-800-ADOPTION today or fill out our online contact form to get more free information now.

What Is Adoption Counseling?

Adoption can come with many complex emotions, including loss, grief and doubt. These emotions can come at a moment’s notice or even years after finalization.

Adoption counseling, also referred to as adoption therapy, is when a licensed adoption counselor or psychologist discusses adoption-related issues with you. They’re here to help you work through your worries and doubts of any kind.

All members of the adoption triad — birth parents, adoptive families and adoptees — can receive adoption counseling together or separately.

Anyone experiencing some difficult emotions because of adoption can receive adoption counseling. Just like anyone who is struggling with a relationship or emotions would speak to a therapist, this is the time to seek professional help.

Still, finding the right therapist can take effort and commitment. Successful therapy depends on your active role in:

  • Finding the right adoption counselor

  • Committing to the process

  • Being present  and a part of the treatment

You may never need an adoption counseling session. But, for those who do, it can be beneficial.

What Are the Benefits of Adoption Counseling?

Adoption counseling may not work for everyone, but many families that work with an adoption counselor may experience benefits like:

  • Stronger and healthier relationships with their spouse and child

  • Improved self-esteem

  • Acceptance of the difficult journey they have been or will go on

An adoption counselor is well-versed in their area of expertise, and they can give you advice specific to your needs.

Also, the benefits of talking to a therapist who specializes in adoption are the same as talking with any therapist or counselor. You can speak openly, receive support and get advice.

When Is it Time to Seek Adoption Counseling?

Only you can decide when it’s time to visit an adoption counselor. It’s a common, healthy service for everyone to use as needed.

If you’re experiencing any complicated emotions, then it might be a good time to try counseling for adoptive parents. Your counselor can help you process:

What if Counseling Isn’t an Option?

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need to retain our own attorney?

No, American Adoptions has established relationships with some of the best adoption attorneys in the nation. Because adoption laws vary from state to state and between counties, it is important to utilize the services of an adoption attorney who specializes in the state where the adoption will finalize, which is unknown until you match with an expectant mother. You have the right to retain your own attorney, but doing so may be an additional, unnecessary expense.

Can we choose the gender of our baby?

American Adoptions does not allow gender specificity in adoption. Any family who wishes to be gender-specific in their adoption should contact us at 1-800-ADOPTION and ask about the possibility of an exception waiver before taking any other steps toward adoption with our agency. Any families who do receive an exception to be gender-specific may also incur an additional fee, which helps cover the additional advertising costs of such a request.

Please note that gender specificity will likely increase your wait time significantly.
